SCHOOL MURALS

When Rotorua’s Lynmore primary school suggested we paint a mural to mark the 50th Jubilee, I was delighted.  The headmaster was excited about the trompe l’oeil genre, so I quickly got down to concepts.  This one emerged as probably the most relevant and poignant.

The celebration of ‘kiwiana’ is inherently colourful, vibrant, and so perfectly nostalgic.  That’s me, in 1976, relaxing and reflecting in the middle (my old school). The fine taklon brushes  weren’t available in that era … so I took one with me.

Transcending time,  children from the 1950’s, 1970’s and the year 2006, work together on this celebratory piece.

I was assisted by good friend and local carver, Manuhuia Curtis, who labored tirelessly on the faux grout. Manuhuia made a subtle, yet valuable contribution from Tangata Whenua. His self-designed tiki sits in silence within the mural,  truly blessing this piece.
