BIO

MURALFEST

      Mural Park, Sheffield, Tasmania.

Purpose built, this village green hosts the annual mural ‘paint-off’ - where each artist paints their visual interpretation of a set poem  …  in 5 days.   Exposed to the whims of the elements made the challenge even more exciting.  Given that Sheffield has four seasons in one day, the detachable plastic curtains saved certain disaster— more than once.  During the event, thousands of people tour the murals,  chatting to the artists, and casting a vote for their favourite image.  The atmosphere is festive and friendly, with a special camaraderie between artists .

2008 Finalists  (left to right)  Me (NZ), Alan (US), Paul (TAS. AUS), Kerry (QSLD. AUS), Tom (SCOTLAND), Patricia (NSW, AUS),  Diana, Pat and Andrew (TAS. AUS).

The recently discovered Chauvet Cave (France, 1994) contains paintings dating back an incredible 35,000 years.  Deemed too precious for public viewing, the cave has now been re-sealed. I used photographs taken by the discoverer, Jean Michel Chauvet to recreate a scene from the ’panel of horses.’

The faux tiles depict the tall ship ‘Endeavour’ signalling the arrival of Captain James Cook to these shores in 1789.

This mural concept invites the viewer to kick off their shoes step beyond the modern facade of colonialism and conflict - and to share in the celebration and warmth of our common ancestry.

          2009 POEM

       “Fire and Life”

Deep inside the earth,

       Molten lava

 Spews forth its fire

  Creating new life.

- Cindy  Bennet

The creation of Adam, from Michelangelo’s  Sistine Chapel, alludes to the very spark of life.  Beyond this, nature plants her random quantum seed - by lightning strike, by earthquake, or by the sudden surge of molten lava.

The concept is fortified (and the illusion heightened) with the installation of modern safety cones and barrier tape.  Apparently,  this would also provide a source of considerable  frustration for small children racing over to pull the plastic ribbon to bits.

          2010 POEM

             “Home”

From darkest cave to seaside

Under stars when nights are warm,

Home is where you wander

Where your truth and essence are born.

- Cindy  Bennet

Ko Tarawera te Maunga.  Tarawera is my mountain. I was born here. I tramped, hunted, fished and camped here.  I got married here.

Everybody has a Turangawaewae—a place of special connection, a place they truly call home.

                      2008 POEM

                 “The Gathering”

In a world where justice bewails its plight,

where the love of all neighbours has taken flight

At a time when inequality is still a blight,

an international gathering becomes a light

From around the world a conference of art,

artists and artistic all playing a part

Lighting candles of unity within the heart,

we are all related, lets inspire new start
